When people’s money represents their work and their work is stolen by crooks who sit around and do nothing, is it unfair for them to be upset? No. The reason the populum is angry with AIG is that they are doing nothing and are being rewarded for it as if they are doing everything. Despite what some think, elites are hardly – if ever – correct.

Is it always about the physical necessity? You speak, you touch, and yet you are nevers satisfied. There is only so much of me, but you seem to be a bottomless bit of need. One of my friends, a hedge fund manager, told me that many of them are waiting for investment opportunities, but not in the United States. I think the future of the United States will be socialistic mantra of equality and people will learn quickly how much they hate that. Remember, if you can’t go above and beyond to live nicely, there’s no reason to.

The Narcissism of Gold

I know male behavior better than anyone on Earth; I can assert things about men that few know about their own self. But one piece of the masculine puzzle confuses me: the obsession with gold. If you haven’t discovered this yet, just look at the modern market to find that gold is the hot commodity – the ultimate item against inflation. In an attempt to discover the furtive value of gold to men’s hearts, I spent the week running the numbers and chasing endless trails.

The first stop of my journey was the obvious charts with gold vs. the market. While bear markets appeared from time to time with the S&P draining and gold climbing, the verity of gold’s consistency failed. Unlike what is often asserted about gold, it did not trump long term inflation. The malleable arms of gold refuse to embrace men with love when times are good and inflation eats away at the hard labor of men’s effort.

The next stop in my journey was the appeal of history: men love history lessons because they perceive that it gives them hints to overcome challenges the future holds. A bad period of time appears on the markets and immediately men are talking about the Weimar Republic or lessons from the Great Depression. Their conclusion from these gelid times: gold is god. Despite the obseqious devotion to gold, history fails to reflect this trend as gold tends to have good times, but falls in value rapidly as these short times end.

My final path was the triumph of pragmatism: men rule the world with their pragmatic gestures that defeat their own perceptions. After all, who came up with Hume’s Dictum or Occam’s Razor? Men. Who discovered gravity and evolution? Men. Therefore the appeal of gold must be in its pragmatic value: it is useful with transistors and is used in dentistry. The major I have with both of these for defenses of gold: they both assume good times. People won’t buy electronic devices when they lack money or fear losing their job and people might deal even deal with the pain of cavities if the price tag is too high. Even with its multitude of uses, the appeal of gold still falls short compared to many things we use on a daily basis.

I gave up. Clearly there was something about gold that I failed to understand: its appeal was not the anti-inflation, or the lessons of history, or even its useful advantages. The only thing I could conclude was that it simply looked beautiful, so to test my theory I went to a jewelry store to see its soft-shiny yellow appeal. I looked through the glass at the gold calling desperately for my eyes and found it ordinary – nothing elegant about it whatsoever. Before I turned to leave, I heard an exclamation, “Oh my God, this ring is so pretty!” I looked over at a young woman holding a golden ring with a large smile when it suddenly hit me: I was questioning the wrong gender.
